So what is responsive web design? I recently re-designed my site using this relatively new practice for designing and building websites. Responsive design has become very popular since the arrival, and huge success, of mobile and tablet devices such as the iPhone and iPad.
Because of the vast growth of these, all types of mobile and other devices now able to access the internet, you never know what size screen someone will be viewing your website on. This is where responsive design comes in. Designing and developing a website in such a way that it cite perfectly to any screen size and offer uses the best possible experience no matter how they are viewing your site.
While devices such as the iPhone and iPad will scale existing, fixed width, sites to make them fit a smaller screen this can often result in much pinching and zooming in and out to try and read text, links and navigate through the site. This is not ideal as it can be a far from perfect experience for the user leaving them frustrated.
It is essential that visitors to your site can find what they are looking for quickly and easily. If a user can’t navigate through your site and completely their task with little effort they will simply click the back button and try somewhere else.
Therefore responsive web design allows you to deliver a perfect user experience to all visitors of your site without having to maintain content on different, device specific sites. To see this in action check out my site http://marchumphries.co.uk and try resizing your browser window.
